Canisius parts ways with Reggie Witherspoon after 8 seasons

By Sam Federman

First reported by @low_madness on Twitter, then by Jeff Goodman before I confirmed with sources and the University announced, that Canisius has moved on from head coach Reggie Witherspoon.

When the Griffs were eliminated from the MAAC Tournament, a Canisius official shut down a question asked by a reporter about Witherspoon's future with the program. Witherspoon, 63, had been the head coach at Canisius for the past eight seasons, going 108-129 and 73-75 in conference play.

He took the Griffs to the postseason in each of his first two seasons, including a 15-3 league mark, tying for the crown, and going to the CBI in 2017-18. However, Canisius failed to finish with a winning league record in any of his final four full seasons at the helm.

Known as a pioneer of the continuity ball screen offense, Witherspoon spent 14 seasons as the head coach of the University of Buffalo, before spending a season as an assistant at Alabama prior to taking the Canisius job. He won nearly 200 games at Buffalo, including 4 20-win seasons.

Early names that I've heard from sources that are linked to the Canisius opening are Steve Curran of George Mason and Adam Cohen of Xavier.
